Nine Percent Is Now Full Employment in America (Is this the new normal we'll have to get use to?)

Without excessive government or consumer spending - which can only create temporary jobs - we believe 9% is now close to full employment in America. Although this statement is initially somewhat shocking, we've been expecting it and only recently realized why it took so long to finally show up. For ten years - from 1998 to 2008 - excess consumer spending, which amounted to about $400 billion a year, created millions of temporary but really nonessential jobs. This somewhat artifical job production masked for ten years the damage being done to America from the loss of 20 million jobs to...
Fishermen against Obama job destruction

I spotlighted the neon green radical-led White House ocean grab last week that is undermining the health of the fishing industry. On Thursday, a fleet of fishermen will gather at Marthas Vineyard to protest Obamas destructive eco-policies. Its just one more wave of the citizen backlash by thousands of victims of the White House war on jobs (flashback: Pushing back: Thousands of Obamas drilling moratorium victims rally in La. ). From the Gloucester Daily Times via the Boston Herald: Leaders of the recreational and commercial fishing industry are planning a boat protest against federal policies Thursday outside the harbor of...
Economics 101: Minimum Wage and Living Wage

Economics 101: Minimum Wage and Living Wage Being the kind compassionate souls we Americans are, we often get tricked into believing things because we want them to be true. Wages, jobs, and poverty are often passionately debated and exceptionally prone to hopeful misinformation and logical fallacies. Minimum wage and the idea of a living wage are examples of just that. They sound good and helpful but in practice they do more bad than good. They displace jobs and discourage hiring, cause increases in price levels, and they don't help the majority actually raise their quality of life. If this all...
Our One-Term President

It's a good bet right now that Barack Obama will be a one-term president. The enthusiasm that once shielded this hyphenated American has dissipated. His supporters, although still numerous, have discovered that he lacks Bill Clinton's centrist instincts, and even his charm. The anti-Bush mania that swept the country from 2006-09 finally burned itself out. It's always possible that the Republicans will nominate a dud. That has happened so often that it should even be considered likely. Not since 1980 has there been an outstanding GOP candidate. But at this stage it's too difficult to predict the 2012 nominee, so...

For the next minute, imagine yourself at a car dealership. You're strapped for cash but find a sleek new ride and ask the salesman for a deal. He quotes you a number that's four times what you have in the bank. And, he warns, even that price isn't fixed -- there's no guarantee you won't pay more in the end. What do you do? For California, the lure of its new ride -- a bullet train system capable of whisking passengers between the Bay Area and Los Angeles -- has proved so enticing that the state jumped at the deal,...

Glenn returns to celebrate 25 years of Right to Work in Idaho

One of the most polarizing figures in Idaho history is marking a triumph that changed the workplace and solidified the Republican hold on Idaho. Gary Glenn, now 52, was the baby-faced but ruthless leader of the long campaign to make Idaho the 21st of 22 states to outlaw "union shops," where workers are obligated to pay dues as a condition of employment. After the passage of Right to Work in 1985 over the veto of Democratic Gov. John Evans, voters affirmed the change 54 percent to 46 percent. The subsequent emasculation of a key component of the Democratic base has...
